First Ever World Spirometry DayOn 14 October 2010, free spirometry will be offered worldwide. This event will be one of the top opportunities to raise awareness about lung health through the public and the media. The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF) will coordinate the organisation of the event.
Each national respiratory society, each patient association, every hospital and every physician will have the responsibility to support this event at its own level.
Spirometry will be delivered to the general public, using primarily the facilities already available in the hospitals and clinics. In each country, a special event, with higher visibility should be organised to attract media attention, such as at the government, with the minister of health, or local celebrities.
The ERS and ELF will coordinate the event at three levels:
Providing material and support for the organisation to the YOL partners and the local/national organisers.
Organise the overall media communication, provide briefing templates to be used at the national level for the general public and the patients.
Offer a special section of the YOL website to monitor in real time the number of tests performed and collect reference data.
